Music and Drama are a big part of student life at Buxlow. We wholeheartedly believe in the many benefits that engagement with the arts can bring, from increased confidence, discipline and self esteem to improved performance across the curriculum. Buxlow students are passionate about performing, and every child finds something to enjoy in these subjects. Our regular productions and performances are a real highlight of the school year.

Music

In addition to timetabled Music lessons, children are able to participate in lessons for a range of musical instruments, including voice. Please see here for details.

Lessons take place both before school and at break times so as not to miss valuable teaching time. An examiner from the ABRSM visits the school once or twice a year and all the children are prepared for, and given the opportunity to sit, a graded exam. Children in Year 6 regularly achieve Grade 5, which for most senior schools is the required standard to be considered for a music scholarship.

Choirs

We boast five school choirs, entry to which is by audition only. The junior choir sing in unison with simple piano or instrumental accompaniments. As the children work their way up the choirs, they learn to sing in parts with more complex accompaniments. By the time they are in Cantabile they will be able to sing a capella in a range of harmonies. Several of our children are members of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain or the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain, and others have gone on to the Chapel Royal Choir.

The list of choirs is as follows:

  • Junior Choir
  • School Choir
  • Chamber Choir
  • Vivaldi Voices
  • Cantabile

    Groups

The school also has a school orchestra , flute choir, clarinet, brass, guitar and recorder group. The latter consists of sopranino, descant, treble and tenor recorder.

    LAMDA

While Drama is integrated into other curriculum subjects, and all children are given regular opportunities to develop performance and presentation skills, we are also pleased to offer LAMDA classes as an extra-curricular subject, taught by Mrs Dearnley. For an additional fee, children can be prepared and entered for the LAMDA examinations – an area in which Buxlow traditionally excels.

    Performances

Our carol service and end of year musical are much loved Buxlow traditions. The Carol Service is completely child led. Our Reception and Nursery children take a starring role in a traditional Nativity tableau, assisted and narrated by Years 5 and 6 and accompanied by the whole school for various dancing, singing and instrumental pieces. All children who learn an instrument or performance skill are able to perform, as the music is specially written for us!

The musical – also arranged specially for us – is a spectacular affair. We put on a full scale production with costumes and sound effects! The leading roles, as far as possible, are given to Year 6 children giving them the opportunity to lead the rest of the school and a final chance to shine. Our school year finishes with our Prize-giving service where are most accomplished musicians showcase their talents and our leavers are given a well deserved send off.

Aside from our carol service and sumner production the children regularly perform at external venues. In recent years we have taken musicians to the O2, Wembley Arena, Kew Gardens, the Royal Albert Hall (where they performed with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain), Merchant Taylor’s School, John Lyon School and The Rudolf Steiner Hall.

The Summer 2019 musical will be ‘Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’.
